44th Meal
Pest Control and Clean-Up Part 4
“...Still no sign…”
“No sign…”
After about an hour. While Mahiru dealt with the scattered clothes one by one, I organized the textbooks around the desk and thoroughly cleaned the windows and flooring with the vacuum cleaner and rags I had brought from my room...However, there is still no sign of "C."
I looked behind the curtains and under the bed, and with Mahiru’s permission, I also took out the futon—which is also an opportunity to place it on the veranda's railings. Except for that time, the balcony window is closed because it would be creepy if we couldn't confirm that it was gone from the room. It's a rather small area where they appear to have a stronghold.
However, there is no way to be sure. It would be more reliable to install a fumigant or fumigation-type insecticide.
I guess I've done everything I can at this point...
“...Ahh…Mahiru-san?”
“Yes? What is it, Onii-san?”
I cleared my throat at the high school girl who looked at me with a puzzled expression.
“Err…It’s good to know that ‘C’ wasn’t on your clothes…”
“Ah, yes! I'm really glad because a lot of my clothes were given to me by my mother's friends, and I wouldn't want bugs to get on such precious things!”
“Even though you said that it was scattered all over the floor…Anyway, that’s not what I meant…”
I told her this while looking away from the bed no futon with a large number of clothes on top—or, more precisely, the small, colorful bundle of fabrics.
“...That’s…Could you please put your underwear somewhere where no one can see it...?”
Mahiru, as expected, was embarrassed that her underwear had been seen by me and slammed them into the storage case under the bed....Sorry about that, but I thought it would be a problem if I didn't say anything...
“...D-Did you see it…?”
“I-Didn’t…Sorry, 'It’s not like I didn’t see it, but I tried to avoid looking at it as much as possible,’ would be correct…”
“Uggggh…!!! I-I-I-I’m really sorry for that..!”

Mahiru, whose face was red like an apple, apologizes to me while shamefully moaning…But, what’s the right response? “I don’t mind it.” No, it's Mahiru who cares, not me. “No, it wasn’t unsightly at all.”—That sounds like a good follow-up, but it would make me a pervert who enjoys looking at high school girls' underwear.
After a moment's thought, I ended up vaguely comforting her by saying, “Don't worry, I really didn't see most of it…” Then the high school girl made a strange noise while covering her head with her hand and stomping her legs around…I know it’s embarrassing but, please because we might get a complaint from downstairs…
I look around her completely clean room to at least quickly change the subject—and then yelled,
“Mahiru!!”
“Hyaaah!!?”
I shouted, grabbed her, and hugged her in my arms vigorously. Then her red face turned even redder with a sound of agitation.
“O-O-O-O-Oniiiii-saaaan!!? T-T-This! I-I-I-I’m not ready for this yet!!!”
“Shhh!”
“!?”
I made a “be quiet” gesture with my index finger on the tip of her nose, and the girl, who was whirling around in her eyes as if confused and screaming something I didn't understand, honestly connected her mouth.
“Don’t move away from me…”
“O-Onii-san…!?”
With her cheeks flushed red, Mahiru's eyelids are tightly closed as if she has made a decision. Then, pulling her close to my chest, I—
“I got it—!”
—At the same time, with a confident shout, the fly swatter that I had brought from my room flashed vertically across the flooring of the Asahi family's home. “....Fue…?” After a few beats, a voice as if confused about what happened sounded from my chest.
“All right! Look, Mahiru! We got the cockroach!”
“...Eh? Wait…Eh…?”
Mahiru looks back in the direction I pointed with a puzzled expression on her face as I let go of her arm while telling her the good news. In the corner of her eye, there was the corpse of the “C” that I had successfully killed. “...Eh…?” and again, a voice as if surprised, leaked out from her.
“Geez, that was a close one. I almost stomped on you, Mahiru. Maybe it came out in response to your flailing earlier, though.”
“...Eh?”
“But I'm glad I found it, because if I didn’t. You would probably have a hard time sleeping.”
“........Eh?”
“But you might want to spray the room with insecticide just in case. They look like adult cockroaches, and if they're laying eggs somewhere in the room, they could be a nuisance. You know how they say, 'When you see one cockroach, think there’s 30’ right?”
“............Eh?”
“Anyway, I guess that settles it. The room is clean, the bugs are gone, and we’ve killed two birds with one stone!”
“...............Eh?”
The high school girl, who was stunned with a red face from a few minutes ago, then slumped down on the spot, perhaps from relief, as I gave her a thumbs-up with a triumphant smile.
“S-So that’s what you mean…” (Tired: It’s obvious that this girl was ready to do the deed lmao.)
Mahiru muttered to herself, and looked down, as if dejected, even though we had just succeeded in killing the “C.”
