High School Students and Sports Festival Part 2
The Sports Festival was progressing smoothly.
The Festival at Utatane High School is a typical red team vs. white team competition, but there are also events for grades and classes.
The white team was leading the current score, and the red team, to which Mahiru and the other first-year students belonged, was lagging behind a little. However, there were no prizes for the winners, and the majority of the students appeared to be more interested in the festive mood than in winning or losing.
Finally, it was time for the “Obstacle Race,” in which Mahiru takes part.
“All right~! Good luck, Mahiru!”
“Thank you, Yukiho-chan.”
“Don't push yourself, okay?”
“Un, Thank you, Hiyori! I’ll do my best!”
Mahiru, who had appeared depressed shortly after the event began, appeared to have regained her composure while cheering on the spectators and was now smiling in her usual friendly manner. When Yukiho and Hiyori saw this, they relieved themselves by patting their chests.
Just then, Aki peeked out from behind them.
“But, it’s a shame that your Onii-san couldn’t make it in time after all~”
“Hey!”
“Baka Aki!” (Tired: This means “Aki, you idiot!” I just translated it as it is ‘cause it was written in Katakana)
Hiyori, who had no intention of taking offense, held her eyes and sagged at the comment, which was said as if she cannot read the mood.
“...You’re right…*sigh*…”
“Look at what you did!? Just as Mahiru is about to regain her good mood!”
“A-Ahaha~ Sorry~ Sorry~”
Mahiru's face turned gloomy for a moment as Aki was grabbed by both shoulders by Yukiho and shaken stiffly but quickly returned to a cheerful expression.
“B-But everyone else is doing their best, so I'll do my best too!”
“M-Mahiru…you've grown up fine…”
“Mom…”
“Good luck~ Mahiru~”
“I'm off–!” She said then the three of them sat down on the bleachers—well, just chairs that had been brought out of the classroom yesterday—and waited for her turn in the field.
It’s still June, but the heat on the ground is quite intense, thanks to the number of people and the fine weather. As they were sipping water, tea, and juice to counteract heat stroke, two boys—Yunomae Yuzuru and Minamida Ryou—approached them.
“Supp~ Oh, just the three of you? Where’s Asahi?”
“On standby because she’s next. Where were you guys doing without cheering us?”
“That’s because we were doing a three-legged race just now…”
“Reall? Sorry, I didn't watch you guys.”
“Weren’t you talking about ‘Cheering’ a few seconds ago…!?”

While Ryo, teary-eyed and saddened by Yukiho's rough treatment, Yuzuru, as usual, coolly pushed up his glasses and crossed his legs in his chair.
“...Hmph, Asahi's in the Obstacle Race, huh? I bet she could easily take first place.”
“I don't know who you're talking about~ I mean, is Mahiru really that athletic~?”
“She’s not bad, but she’s not good either. How she wins depends on who she’s up against.”
“I know, right~? Yuzuru always says things he doesn't understand as if he does.”
When Aki teasingly said so, the bespectacled boy relaxedly smiled and said,
“You are the ones who don't get it. It may be true if it is just a relay, but Asahi's event is Obstacle Race. It’s not only a test of athletic ability but also a test of luck and dexterity. There is no way that anyone can match Asahi in those areas.”
“...Luck aside, Hima is not dexterous at all, you know?”
“What?”
Yuzuru's eyes twitched. Hiyori, on the other hand, looks at him with sharp eyes, as if she does not want to be talked to like she knows something about her best friend. And Aki looks distantly at the sparks that scatter between the two as if it says, “Uwah~ It’s so hot~”
“...Kotsubaki. Don't say random things just because you're good friends with Asahi.”
“That's my line. What the hell do you know about Hima?”
“H-Hey, what are you guys fighting about? We’re supposed to have fun today with the festival, you know? Such trivia—”
“”It’s not trivial!!””
“What’s with that perfect synced!?”
Just Ryou was about to intervene but was blown away by the angry voices of two people, the buzzer in the schoolyard rang, announcing the start of the next competition—the Obstacle in which Mahiru was competing.
“..Hmph, then just watch. If Asahi didn’t win first place, I’ll buy a Yakisoba bread from one of the stalls.”
“It’s not like I said she couldn’t win first place. But fine, I’ll buy a can of coffee if she does.”
“Huh, are you guys betting? Then I’ll buy if Mahiru wins thir—”
“Fuyushima you bastard! If you don't believe that the Asahi will win first place, then don't butt in!”
“Ehh!!? Then, That's not a bet then, is it?”
“Yukio…this is not a battle for things—it's a battle for our souls (pride).”
“Aren’t you exaggerating!? You should put yourself in the Mahiru’s shoes, who has to carry such a thing on her shoulders without permission!”
…While the Guardians on the bleachers were fighting to the very last minute, the girl in the middle of it all was looking around to see if she could spot a young man among the general spectators, unaware of the ugly conflict.
