Volume 2 — Chapter 2 — Hero Part 4

“You want me to give you some medicines?”
I exclaimed so in a hysterical tone.
The reason was that I was preparing to return to the capital when I received a request from the village chief. As I said before, he wanted me to give him some medicine.
The village chief must have misunderstood that I was angry because he got down on his knees and said,
“I-I’m very sorry for my rudeness to a nobleman like you, please spare my life…”
“...No, I’m not offended, so raise your head. More importantly, tell me why you need the medicine?”
I ask with dismay.
It was indeed an impolite thing to demand goods directly from a nobleman. It would be proper to call on a government official or a merchant for such a matter. Depending on the person he was talking to, he may be punished on the spot.
However, the village headman's expression showed his impatience. I guessed that he was in a very tight situation. Therefore, I did not punish him but left room for extenuating circumstances.
I also signaled to knights nearby to stand down. Or rather, I had already restrained them with a light [Intimidation]. Otherwise, the village chief's head would have physically flown off by now. Their loyalty was also something to think about.
After that, the village chief raises his head timidly.
“I-Is it all right?”
“There must be some circumstances, right? I can't say you'll get off scot-free, but depending on what you have to say, I'll give you some leniency.”
“T-Thank you very much!”
It was difficult to say that there will be no penalties due to the dignity of a Noble. The village chief seemed to understand this and began to get down on his knees again with the force slamming his head to the ground. I told him to raise his head.
After some time, the village chief finally calmed down and proceeded with his situation.
What he told us was a worse situation than I had imagined. No wonder he wanted the medicine, even if it was rude.
“All the hunters are seriously wounded. Is it?”
Furthermore, he stated that it was a serious, life-threatening injury.
If this situation continues, there would be no one left in the village who can hunt, and they wouldn’t be able to store meat. For a village that had benefited so much from the neighboring mountains, this must have been a major blow. Or perhaps the village was on the verge of extinction, considering the fact that it was just before winter.
When I asked why the village had fallen into such a situation, the village chief replied with some reluctance.
The reason for this was to prepare a meal for us. They wanted to ensure fresh meat since they could not serve simple food to a Noble.
Hmmm, I feel so guilty about this…
In this incident, the village chief acted on his own, and I am not responsible.
Nevertheless, my conscience was too sore to ignore everything. I couldn't leave the situation where the other party was suffering tremendous damage as a result of their attempts to be hospitable.
“How are they?”

I asked the knights who had been sent to check on the hunters.
But, they shook their heads with grim expressions.
“Three days at most.”
“The wound is too deep. The medicine we have will only prolong their life for a day or two.”
“I see…”
It seems that handing over the medicine is not the end of the situation.
Then—
“Haa…”
After a few minutes of contemplation, I let out a big sigh.
I really didn't want to rely on her, but I don't want this village to be destroyed. Well, let's just think of it as a boost to her reputation.
“Shion, deliver a message to the castle.”
“What would the message is about?”
Shion responded to my instructions with a striking response.
She seems to know what I was thinking as she has been serving by my side for a long time. I could rely on her.
“Call Caron, tell her to prepare to leave.”
“I understand.”
Shion bowed condescendingly and left the place.
The only way to heal the seriously wounded was to ask for Caron’s help.
To be honest, I didn't want her anywhere near Yudai, but I couldn't turn my back on him. If we don't do something, his hometown will be destroyed.
I'll be on my way to pick her up. In fact, I have developed new magic that would allow me to travel between the castle and the village in an instant. In consideration of the surrounding people, I wouldn’t pick her up until the next morning.
Most of the people working in the castle, including Shion, were aware of the new magic, so they understand even if I don't say it aloud.
The only thing left was to keep the hunters alive until Caron arrived.
That’s why I gave instructions to the knights.
“You will give the medicine to the hunters. You do not have to be stingy with the supplies.”
“”””Ha! We understand, sir!””””
After a brisk reply, all the knights except for the guards left.
The village chief, who had been watching the situation up to this point, bowed his head with tears in his eyes.
“Z-Zechs-sama! Thank you so much for hearing my plea!”
“It's fine. But you must be punished in some way for your rudeness earlier.”
“I am prepared to do so…”
“All right, I'll let you know how it goes.”
“Y-Yes…”
“Now, go back to your posts. The chief has other matters to attend to.”
“Yes, please excuse me…”
He bowed his head deeply but I lightly waved my hand and let him leave the room.
With only two knights remaining in the room, I leaned back in the chair I was sitting in.
“Haaa…This is troublesome.”
I am not referring to the hunter's serious injuries. While that was relevant, there was a more serious problem.
Because if the hunters were wiped out, there would be no one to save Marina. Worst of all, it raises the possibility of her death.
Although this was probably a pessimistic guess, the probability was not zero. It would be an unbelievable situation if the heroine died because I came to this village.
Furthermore, if I abandoned Yudai and the others, there was a chance he would hold a grudge against me.
Objectively, I am not to blame for the heroine's death, but given Yudai's personality, there is a good chance he will hold a grudge against me.
Under the circumstances, I had no choice but to take the place of the hunter. The knights were too heavily equipped to save a girl who had fallen down a cliff.
After meditating for a while, I stood up suddenly. Then I told the knights—
“I’m going out. Don’t let anyone enter the room except my relatives until I return.”
“Yes sir, we understand. But, where are you headed?”
“To the mountains. I will return as soon as I can, but it may not be until the next morning. Let Shion think of an excuse then.”
“We understand, please take care.”
The knights were fully aware of my strength—we have mock battles from time to time—so they didn't try to hold me back by simply asking me where I'm going. I am glad to hear that they were quick to talk. I'll be nice to these two in the next mock battle.
I disappeared with [Cover Texture] and headed toward the mountain where Yudai and the others were waiting.
