Volume 2 — Chapter 6 — Part 2 Overnight Incident
— — —
The place that was originally supposed to be Caron's private room was in a terrible state that it was beyond repair. The room was engulfed in flames, and the walls that had surrounded it on all sides were crumbling. It would not be unnatural to call it a ruin.
There was no sign of the enemy. As far as I could detect, they had escaped from the capital. It seems that they realized the failure of their assault and left the city at once. Tsk, they're quick to run away.
Then, a voice called out to us.
“Zechs-nii! Caron-chan!”
It was Orca, who rushed toward us as if he didn't care about the flames. He had an expression of mixed frustration and relief on his face.
Incidentally, he was not alone; there were several knights behind him who were probably his guards. They rush to catch up with him when he suddenly starts running.
Orca's cheeks puffed out as he came to our side.
“I was worried when I couldn't find the two of you! I tried to contact you with magical tools, but you didn't answer at all!”
He had an adorable angry expression, for which the onomatopoeic word “Pun Pun” was appropriate. I wasn't afraid of him at all, but it would be better not to tell him. [Tired: It’s a Japanese onomatopoeia which means in the state of being very mad.]
I felt that the heavy atmosphere calmed a little. Yeah, I was too tense. But that lessened a little thanks to Orca.
“Sorry. There was a lot going on that I don’t have time to contact you through [Telepathy].”
“Hmm…It sounds like it's true by the looks of the three of you, but be careful next time, okay? Caron’s room exploded, I couldn't see the three of you, and then I heard that there was a bandit invasion. I was so worried…”
“Ugh…I’m sorry…”
My eyes began to moisten. Even though the situation was unavoidable, I felt a great sense of guilt.
After hearing my apology, Orca let out a sigh and said,
“Let’s move to another place. It’s not safe here.”
Orca had a good point, so we moved to the office.
Caron and Shion, however, headed for the infirmary. Although the light magic had healed her injuries, they still hadn't woken up, probably due to the shock of the damage. She being escorted by Caron.
“So what happened?”
Orca asked after taking a breath.
“Before we get into that, I want to make sure we know what's going on.”
I wanted to get information after I left in order to communicate efficiently.
As I was thinking about filling in the situation one by one, Orca replied in a brisk manner,
“All the bandits were defeated, although they were all self-destructed. The only physical damage to the castle is the ceiling of Caron-chan's room and Zechs-nii’s private room. There are several wounded, but they are all minor. There were no other intruders within my detection range. This is the latest information I've been able to find. Also, Curtis is missing. It seems he was given a magic dummy, so it's unclear how long he's been free to move around.”
“I'm amazed you were able to compile all those information so accurately….”
He wasn't even here long enough, and yet, I didn't think he had organized all the information I wanted to know. I marveled at my stepbrother’s excellence.
Orca proudly puffed out his chest.
“Fufun. This much is just a piece of cake!”
“You've been working hard on your studies lately. Thank you.”
“Ah…I didn't know you knew about…”
[Tired: He’s a bro/sis con, of course, he knew about that.]
Orca looks a little taken aback by my praise.
Naturally, I’ve heard about my own brother that he was studying politics recently. I also know that his motivation was to be of help to me. I couldn’t thank my brother enough for his kindness.
The air was warm and fuzzy, but after a while, Orca let out a coughing sound.
“Zechs-nii. Isn’t it about time you tell me what happened earlier?”
“You’re right…”
I explained the circumstances. It wasn't a long story. I was informed of the bandit invasion by an intelligence officer. On the way there, I sensed that Caron was in danger and was able to get to her just in time.
Orca's brow furrowed as I finished the story.
“The intruders into the city were all decoys, and their main mission was to assassinate Zechs-nii and Caron-chan. No wonder it was such a large-scale raid.”

That’s right. This incident was a decoy operation. The 20 bandits were all decoys. The real objective was to assassinate me and Caron.
I realized this when I heard from the agent about the characteristics of the bandits. They used a technique similar to Shion's and blew themselves up so as not to leave any corpses. Hearing that much, I suspected that the enemy might be elves. If they were elves, it would explain the similarity of the technique and why they could not leave behind a corpse.
It was just a theory, but it was a good enough starting point. I decided that if the bandit was an elf, then Curtis was the mastermind, and I immediately tried to locate him.
I found him in Caron’s private quarters. Then there was a bandit in the ceiling of my room, too.
After that, you know the rest. I killed the bandit instantly and rushed to the private room where Caron and Shion were.
“It was a classic strategy, but I fell for it.”
No, it was because it was classic, wasn't it? The reason it has been used so many times and not eliminated was that it was so effective.
Curtis must have been aware of Caron's tight security and their own vigilance. Hence, he sent a suicide squad. To loosen them to the level that he could sneak in.
No matter how strong Caron and Shion were, they weren’t a match for him if they were caught by surprise. Especially since Caron was a child and therefore inexperienced in dealing with such situations. When I think about it, the handiwork of the one who crushed Shion first was disgusting.
Orca puts his hand over his mouth and says doubtfully.
“But why did he resort to hard-line means? The goal over there was to gather information about Foranada, right?”
“I think he probably had assassination in mind from the very beginning.”
In contrast, I denied his original outright.
Orca was blindingly surprised.
“But why? Foranada is booming these days, but not to the extent that the royal court considers it dangerous. Besides, Caron is a rare light magician.”
His objection was a natural one. The royal court does not seem to have any motive to kill me or Caron.
However, taking into account the information we have so far, I could only assume that the assassination was a predetermined course of action.
There were reasons to conclude so.
“—The biggest reason is the presence of twenty units used as decoys. As Orca is probably aware, there are communication jamming magical tools placed throughout Foranada territory.”
The jamming tool was quite powerful, and any unregistered communication device was first and foremost useless. It prevented Curtis himself from leaving the territory and even prevents those of his kind from escaping. No contact with the outside world would have been possible.
In other words—
“I see. If he can't get in touch with the outside world, he can't call for backup. So it’s highly likely that that decoy unit had been prepared for some time now.”
“Probably. Unless he used some kind of secret method that even I can't imagine, but if he only used ordinary means, he must have been prepared in advance.”
“But if such a unit was hiding in the capital, wouldn't we be aware of it?”
“The intruders were engaged near the entrance to the capital. They were probably hiding somewhere outside the capital until just before the operation was commence. Maybe they were out in the open the whole time.”
“Eeee…For two months after Curtis arrived?”
“The other party is a professional. At least, that's better than the probability that they managed to avoid our jamming transmission.”
The fact that the guy was a pro was more likely than not that he was going to make it through. After all, these guys would blow themselves up before they could be caught. I'm sure they'd be willing to spend two months in the field.
Orca then said something while perplexed,
“Assuming the assassination was as originally planned. Then why did they decide to go ahead with it at this time? There must have been a kicker that made them decide it was worth losing a rare light magician, right?”
“Yeah…There must have been something that seemed beyond the control of the Royal Court…But, sorry, I don't know that much.”
Even I couldn't read Curtis's thoughts. I had no idea of any events that might have triggered it.
Hearing so, Orca let out a wry smile.
“I can only guess from the results. It's a shame we let Curtis escape. I wonder what the royal court will say.”
What developments might lie ahead based on the information Curtis would have brought back? He seemed to be imagining that area. He was holding his head as he whispers.
In response, I tilted my head.
“What are you talking about, Orca? We haven't let Curtis getaway yet, you know?”
“Eh?”
Then, this time, Orca made a dumbfounded expression.
“But I'm not picking up any response on my detection spell…”
“I've got Curtis's shadow right in my sights. It seems he was using magic to hide reactions such as heat, vibration, and light. That's why it doesn't get caught by the detection spell of attribute magic.”
Fire magic detects heat, earth magic detects vibration, and so on. Curtis, a spy for the royal court, was well-versed in these countermeasures.
However, my detection technique relies on magic. He was a perfect prey for magical deception.
“It looks like we're in the woods a little ways from the Capital…Hey, this is…I see, that's how it is.”
“W-What happened?”
From the detection’s response, I noticed that Curtis had a strange trick up his sleeve, and from that, he made a certain inference.
I couldn't help but loosen my cheeks.
Seeing this, for some reason, Orca was flustered.
Wondering what was going on, I responded.
“Ahh~ I came up with a good plan to make you pay for hurting my family.”
If he was going to use such tricks, I won't hold back either. I'm going to beat him to death. He touched my reverse scale.
“Ku-ku-ku-ku-ku-ku”
“Awawawa…
It was almost dawn, and the end of the incident was imminent.
