Volume 1 Epilogue

Let me quickly summarize what happened after the incident in Byakudai territory.

To begin with, the former Baron Byukudai had passed away. Caiser-shi, the Eldest Son, had declared that he would return the title to His Majesty the Holy King. Then, as expected, the former barony passed into the hands of a branch house of Count France's family.

The surviving citizens were transferred to Count Foranada's territory. After that, I asked for reinforcements with long-distance transmission magic tools and had them escorted by the knights who had rushed to the scene. Thanks to their efforts, we were able to transfer them without a single injury.

The immigrants were received in a village not far from the capital of Foranada. It has been determined that the villagers have no prejudice against the beastmen, and because they were accommodating with security deposits and tax exemptions, I don't believe there would be any problems. But for the time being, I'll keep an eye on them.

I chose a location near the capital because I was concerned about assassination attempts on Count France's faction. It was unlikely because he had achieved my goal of destroying the beastmen nobles, but if they were within my reach, it would be easier to help them.

Next, let me tell you what happened to the Garbauda faction, to which Baron Byakudai belongs.

Unfortunately, they were all wiped out in the end.

I went alone as reinforcement for them after my conversation with Caiser-shi, but they had already been massacred. Everyone had been reduced to mute corpses, and the Nobles who had been captured had most likely already been transported. The traces suggested that the battle had already ended by the time we arrived at the Byakudai territory.

That's how serious the other party must have been about destroying the Garbauda’s faction, but I could not shake the feeling that I could not do anything about it. I had missed out on something that I could have picked up, and I felt such a sense of loss.

Of course, I did not have the arrogance to think that I could save all lives. But I have decided to train myself even harder so that I would be prepared to deal with the same situation in the future.

Then, the evaluation of Foranada's actions this time by the other Noble Families was not favorable.

If you think about it, that was only natural. We sent reinforcements, but only a few people from the fief and the barons' lineage were saved. The Baron's family was destroyed. So, from the nobility's point of view, we were described as having achieved nothing.

However, there were exceptions.

The first was related to the speed of our march. The story that we drove a horse-drawn carriage a month's distance in a single day was so out of the ordinary that no one believed it at first. As soon as it became known that it was true, inquiries and spies never stopped.

Furthermore, the news of Caron's manifestation of Light Magic caused a tremor throughout the Holy Kingdom.

It was the birth of the Holy Kingdom's second Light-attribute Magician in this world. It was no surprise that she was the center of attention. Those seeking Caron's custody immediately contacted me through various means.

It has been about two years since I took control of Foranada. During that time, the power of the Count's territory had grown, so there was no need for me to be concerned about Caron being taken away from me. Because the situation was foreseeable in advance, countermeasures were implemented both politically and militarily. There was one concern that remains, but that was something I would have to deal with as I watch the direction of the wind.

Nevertheless, there were fewer moves on the military side than expected.

The reason for this could be guessed. Perhaps it was because Caron’s reputation was growing rapidly among some of the Nobles with a Military household and the populace.

Caron's success in this intervention in the civil war has been widely publicized. It was well known that she healed and cheered up the survivors with her Light Magic, and also that she pleaded for reinforcements out of love for her adoptive brother(Orca).

As a result, Caron became famous as the merciful [Saint of Sunlight] who cares about her family.

It would be too outrageous to attack someone who was referred to as a Saint, no matter how much it might cost. Even if it was a covert operation, it was normal for people to hesitate in case they were exposed.

Therefore, only those who didn’t care about their own appearance could have sent any kind of assassins.

—Well, everything was as expected.

I planned this course of events(story) when I decided to intervene in the civil war. That's why we marched loudly and proudly displayed Caron's light magic. It was preferable to intervene fairly and openly rather than sneak around, knowing that we would eventually be discovered.

Also, the rumors that were spreading around were arranged by me. I gave the order to stir up the public to make Caron look on the righteous side. In terms of public opinion, I could tell that it worked quite well.

I’m sure that the nobles, who have better intelligence, would eventually realize that the Foranada was behind all of that. But, by that time, Caron's reputation would have grown to such an extent that there was no way for them to touch her.

I was concerned about what would happen in this situation for a while. Somehow, I believe we have come to a satisfactory conclusion.

“Hence, that’s the effects of the civil war.”

In the office, I stopped writing.

It has been a month since we returned from the civil war. I was finally able to sit back down after being busy with various processes. I was trying to organize the changes that had taken place up to this point, and I was compiling a series of flowcharts on a piece of paper.

As a result, I was able to analyze the situation calmly.

The former Baron and the survivors could be left alone for now. There was no sign of assassination at all. It could be said that those from that faction don’t care about those who have fallen to being commoners.

As expected, the problem was related to Caron. I've managed to deal with it so far, but if I let my guard down, I couldn't deny the possibility of making a painful mistake someday. It would be safer to expand the Count's territory even more.

Then there was that matter of concern. I couldn’t say anything about that until the time comes…But, Caron’s six and a half years old now, and it will be at least two years from now on. That’s why I should prepare myself for that.

As I groaned, Shion, who was standing by me, peeked at my hand. Then she whispered a few words.

“Was it all right that you didn’t write anything about yourself?”

“About myself?”

I tilted my head.

I knew she asked about the document, and I'm sure it had something to do with the civil war, but was there anything important that involved me? I have no idea.

When she saw that I was seriously don’t know what she was talking about, she let out a big sigh.

“Zechs-sama, even if it's just a little bit, isn’t better if you turn the attention to yourself?”

Then, my subordinates, who seemed to have been listening while ignoring their work, began to nod in unison.

Seriously…? was it possible that I was so uninterested in myself that my subordinates were concerned about me?

I’m not aware of it at all. Still, even after being told this much, I didn't feel the slightest bit of realization.

Shion, who recognized the situation, let out another sigh.

Now that I think about it, this girl seems less reserved than before. No, it was better for me, but I wonder if something changed her mind?

When I started to think about it, Shion took the opportunity to point it out.

“Hey, you’re thinking about others again, aren’t you? We're currently discussing about Zechs-sama.”

“Ahhh….”

I see, It was true that I have very little interest in myself. I'm more preoccupied with other people's business than mine.

Hmm….that was a very serious condition that I couldn't recognize unless I'm given an actual example like this. But, what’s wrong wit—huh?

“What’s the matter?”

Shion inquired suspiciously after noticing my pause.

Then, I responded in a matter-of-fact manner.

“Nothing, it’s just that it's so severe that I can't even be aware of it without being told so much, it means it's out of my control and I don't need to get it fixed. It would be more productive to spare time and effort for other things than to put in that kind of effort.”

Hearing this, she sat down with her head in her hands. I looked around and saw that the other executives were also holding their heads in their hands.

Eh? What the heck?

“What's wrong, everyone?”

I asked, and they all looked up and shouted,

“““““““It’s your fault!”””””””

Woah, all of them were in perfect synced.

And so, today was another peaceful day in the Foranada territory.

— — —

Incidentally, when I asked again later about what Shion had said about “Myself,” I found out more details.

I heard that my reputation has been severely damaged. People say I was a coward who sent my younger siblings to the battlefield while I stayed in the safety of my territory because I didn't participate in the civil war.

All right, what's the problem with that? It was as expected of Caron's reputation, and I think we could leave this level of gossip alone.

When I responded in this manner, I was severely scolded, much like an office worker. But, I really don’t understand…
